This past weekend the Raleigh Sanford's burned up the VA highways. Friday morning started out with caravaning with the Canton Sanford's to the Cracker Barrel in Roanoke Rapids. We let Madison stretch her legs for a bit after breakfast and the Canton Sanford's continued on to the Springfield Sanford's. Dad went into surgery about the time we got on the road. We were hoping for a short surgery, but as the day went on, we realized that dad was having the full Whipple surgery. The trip to Charlottesville was long and worrisome. Our family had never experienced anything like this before. Getting to the hospital was my #1 objective, but with a hungry 15 month old, all that changes. After a quick bite, I left Jeff and Madison back at the hotel and I made it to the hospital around 3pm or so. Dad was STILL in surgery and our next update was at 5pm. At that time, we found out that it would only be an hour or so more. The doctor came down to update us and to let us know that dad came through the surgery with flying colors! Just as the doctor had let us know from the beginning, the surgery lasted for 8 hours! When we saw dad later that night, he was in very good humor and was very happy it was all over.Tuesday, June 2, 2009
